And this is not particularly welcomed by the owners of the house. Although the doors do not interfere very much, since the metal can heat up and then give off a little heat to the room.

It is due to the high efforts that were invested in the production that this glass has a high price, being considered one of the most expensive.

Borosilicate glass

This glass is made from a large amount of silica with the obligatory addition of boron oxide. This chemical element is famous for being able to provide a low melting point, which means that the glass will have plasticity. The finished product is capable of having a high degree of heat resistance (about 800 degrees). In addition, it will be endowed with a special mechanical strength, 5 times higher than that of ordinary glass. That is why fireplace doors are so often made from it.

Making doors

These works are not very difficult, therefore, they can also be performed by a non-professional. You do not need specific skills and knowledge. Production takes place in this order:

  1. According to the required parameters, a corner is cut out, which is laid out on an absolutely flat surface. Then it is inserted into the mold.
  2. The uniformity and correctness of the connections is checked using a square.
  3. The joints of the elements are fixed to each other by welding.
  4. Residues of welding are cleaned.
  5. A frame is installed on a metal sheet, and door contour marks are also made on the sheet.
  6. If the metal is about 2mm thick, then you don't need to weld a separate frame. Now its size is drawn - a little more than the internal one. The sheet will overlap, so it can protect the room from smoke.
  7. The metal element is also cut out with a grinder.

  9. The weld bead is removed, after which the handle is attached.

Summing up, it can be noted that any type of doors is good in its own way. Materials for fireplaces are selected depending on the conditions of their operation. Therefore, this is the responsibility of the fireplace manufacturer.

Closed fireplaces are not only doors, but also a cast-iron or steel firebox inside the structure. Technologies do not stand still, and even ordinary fireplaces are already equipped with various economic systems, trying to use their resources to the maximum. But does the open type really have no chance, and is it hopelessly outdated? In fact, this is not so - the open type of fireplaces has very significant advantages that cannot be simply ignored.

  • First, you will be able to see the fire that is not hidden behind glass or other obstruction.
  • Secondly, an open fireplace gives off heat in the form of radiant energy, which is more useful than convection heat.
  • Thirdly, an open firebox looks more harmonious in traditional options for arranging a fireplace.
  • Fourth, an open fireplace is a source of an open fire, where you can cook food on the grill, skewer or in a pot.
  • And fifthly, open fireplaces begin to give warmth literally from the first spark!

However, in closed types of fireplaces, an additional air flow is supplied to the upper part of the combustion chamber, which contributes to the complete combustion of CO - its oxidation to harmless CO 2. Fire safety of closed fireplaces, for obvious reasons, is an order of magnitude higher than open ones. In order for the door to be installed without unnecessary monotonous labor, you will need tools such as a grinder equipped with a ceramic cut-off wheel, a building level, a heat-resistant oven mixture, ceramic dowels and screws, asbestos thread.

How to install a fireplace door with your own hands - a step by step diagram

Step 1: Determine the size

Manufacturers of fireplace doors do not produce them wider than 70 cm - such a design would be too heavy for a fireplace. Therefore, the door for a fireplace with glass that you are going to buy should not be wider than 50 cm in the optimal version. Focus on the existing opening and select the door a little wider than the opening so that you can insert it more tightly. Step 2: cutting the grooves

  • In addition, these doors are durable and strong. And if you take care of them correctly (the care itself consists only in periodic anti-corrosion treatment using paints belonging to the heat-resistant category), then they will serve for many decades without causing any inconvenience to users.

Note! Despite the fact that iron doors have their own customers, the market demand for them is quite low, since they do not allow visual observation of the playing flame.

Cast iron doors

Just like the previous version, such doors are used mainly for stoves in baths and in summer cottages, but they are almost never found in fireplaces. In general, this is a kind of intermediate link between iron and glass doors. Their use is explained by their increased resistance to high temperatures, but this, of course, damages the service life (when compared with metal) and aesthetic indicators (with heat-resistant glass). Although, if you wish, you can make the doors for stoves and fireplaces more aesthetic if you cover them with fire-resistant enamel.

What should you look for when buying? General recommendations

  • If you want to visually observe the fire, then you will need either a completely glass door, or a metal one, but with inserts of their heat-resistant glass. Moreover, the higher the cost of the product, the greater the aesthetic appeal.
  • If the thickness of the fire-resistant glass is less than 0.4 centimeters, then it is installed in the dampers using a seal and with a small gap necessary to compensate for thermal expansion under the influence of the flame (otherwise the material may burst).

In others, it is possible to connect an air intake pipe from the house or to ensure complete tightness of the combustion chamber, so that automatic system control and regulation of the functioning of the heater.

Heat resistant glass

So, we found out that in most cases, consumers prefer to install doors for fireplaces and stoves made of heat-resistant glass (except for those appliances that consume coal or mixed fuel). What is the secret of popularity? First of all, the fact that today the production of such glasses has significantly improved and become more complicated. The production process consists of several stages, such as:

  • heat treatment;
  • chemical treatment;
  • high temperature polishing.

With the help of special glass furnaces, manufacturers receive sheets of material of the required thickness, and their (sheets) surfaces are treated with special preparations that increase not only fire resistance and strength, but also the operational life of finished products.

Moreover, today, unlike several years ago, heat-resistant glasses are produced with crystal and corrugated surfaces, as well as tinted (in the latter case, bright flashes of fire are somewhat muffled).

Above, we have already mentioned glasses that are capable of independently removing soot that appears on the surface. Such glasses are called self-cleaning glasses and differ in that they are covered with an almost invisible ball of metal oxide. Due to this, the inner surface of the glass when burning fuel heats up to a higher temperature, and the soot, as a result, almost completely burns out.

How to care for fireplace doors?

We have already noted that metal doors for stoves and fireplaces do not need special care - you just need to paint them with heat-resistant paint. With glass models, everything is somewhat more complicated. For example, even self-cleaning models must be periodically cleaned of accumulated soot. This procedure will require a damp cloth and detergent (the same "Mister Muscle"), but without abrasive components and chlorine. This will prevent damage to the glass and protective layer.

Note! Only remove soot from cooled material, otherwise it may become unusable.
