The most convenient way to do this is using the formula 2*3.14*r, where r is the span width. For example, with a span width of 1000 mm, the circumference will be 6280 mm. To get the width of the step from the outside, it is enough to divide this distance by the number of steps in one span. For example, with 10 steps the distance will be 628mm, which will allow you to create a smooth staircase without voids.

Welding a metal staircase to the second floor means getting an almost eternal and at the same time the most durable and aesthetic structure. You can try making it yourself if you wish. There are several types of such stairs. Some of them are easy to manufacture, others require certain skills to weld. Of course, to manufacture such a design you will need special equipment.

Open and closed structures

It can be either closed or open. In the first case, the entire structure is subsequently covered with finishing material. That is, the staircase is sheathed with plasterboard and wood. To make such a frame, it is allowed to use cheap channels and corners that are not very attractive in appearance.

In order to make an open frame, you will need to purchase metal coated with enamel. All welding work is carried out with the utmost care. After all, on the open frame, which in this case becomes part of the interior, no seams should be visible. But these metal stairs (photo below) look simply great.

Marching stairs

A flight of stairs is considered the most convenient option to use. Everyone is familiar with this design. These are the stairs that are installed in the entrances of high-rise buildings. Of course, such a structure can also be made of metal. There are only three main types of staircases: on strings, on stringers and on supports.

Stairs on bowstrings

A characteristic feature of staircases on bowstrings is that the steps on the side are not visible. Making metal stairs of this type is a simple process. In this case, the supports for the steps are simply attached to the inside of the main beams.

Staircases on stringers

When making stairs on stringers, corners under the steps are welded on top to pre-installed channels (serving as support beams). This results in a very reliable design. You can weld a metal staircase to the second floor either on two stringers or on one. In the latter case, there is only one support channel beam, and it is installed in the middle. This design looks very light and elegant and usually does not require risers.

Staircase on supports

This type of metal staircase to the second floor is not used very often in residential buildings. The fact is that a lot of metal is needed to make it. The risers and steps of such a staircase are attached to horizontal supports starting from the floor itself.

Spiral staircases

Spiral staircases are most often used where the size of the room does not allow the installation of a marching structure. They look very interesting, but they are not very convenient to use and are less safe. In this case, the entire structure is built around one supporting horizontal pipe.

Making a ladder on bowstrings

So, how to make a metal staircase to the second floor? First of all, you need to prepare the source material. To make a structure on bowstrings you will need:

  1. Channel with a section of 150x200 mm with a wall thickness of 8 mm.
  2. 45x45 mm.
  3. Welding machine.
  4. Electrodes.
  5. Grinding welding discs.
  6. Primer for metal.

The channels are attached to the load-bearing concrete beam at the top and to the slab at the bottom parallel to each other. 20-45 degrees is considered optimal. When installing channels, this must be taken into account.

Next, sections for the steps should be welded to the inner sides of the resulting supports. In this case, be sure to use a level. It is also important to remember that the height of the step should not be more than 18 cm. The optimal width is considered to be 30 cm. If this condition is met, you will get a very comfortable metal staircase. It won’t be too difficult to build such a structure with your own hands.

Making stairs on stringers

To make a staircase on stringers, you will need the same material as for a structure on strings. In this case, the load-bearing channel bars are also pre-installed. Next you will need to make supports for the steps. They are made from a corner that must be bent at an angle of ninety degrees. The resulting gusset supports are welded to the channels from above or from the inside, carefully monitoring their horizontalness. The end result is a very reliable metal ladder. Making such a design with your own hands is somewhat more difficult than the version with bowstrings.

There is also another way to install supports under the steps. In this case, racks are welded to the top of the channel, the height of which is equal. During installation, use a level, achieving strict verticality of the elements. The frame for the steps is welded separately from the corner. The resulting quadrangular frames are welded to the racks on one side and to the channels on the other.

If one of the channels is adjacent to the wall, it makes sense to additionally attach it to it with anchors. After the frame is completely welded, all its elements must be coated with a primer and painted with two layers of paint.

What can steps be made of?

Metal steps for stairs must be made of material at least 3 mm thick. It is best if their surface is corrugated. You can also cover the top of these steps with anti-slip material. To attach them to the supports, metal screws are used, which must be screwed in from below.

Metal steps are rarely used in residential premises. After all, the material is quite cold. And walking on it, say, barefoot will not be very pleasant. Therefore, most often in houses a metal staircase with wooden steps is installed. The tree is attached to the frame in this case also using self-tapping screws.

How to make handrails

A fence for a metal staircase can be made using reinforcing bars, tubes or rolled metal. Handrails can be attached to the supporting channel in three ways: with bolts, by welding or as an entire structure. For railings, you can take pipes with a diameter of 35-80 mm. They are welded to the upper ends of pre-fixed posts. To make the surface of the railing pleasant to the touch, they can be covered with a plastic pipe, having first cut it lengthwise.

How to design a finished staircase

After the frame is welded and the steps and handrails are installed, you can begin the final design of the staircase. When welding structural elements, the seams should be placed inside. In this case, they will not interfere with the finishing lining. The stairs are usually finished with wood or plasterboard. When choosing a material, they are guided primarily by the overall style of the interior.

The material is cut in accordance with the design features of the stairs. The sheathing is fastened with self-tapping screws or self-tapping screws in such a way that there are no gaps left at the joints.

A metal staircase can be made with your own hands without much difficulty. But only if you have basic welding skills. Inept actions can lead to damage to the frame. As a result, you will have to redo all the work again, or the ladder will turn out to be unsafe to use. If you are not confident in your abilities, it still makes sense to spend money by turning to specialists.
